Job Description
POSITION: Part-Time Church Musician/Choir Director
Position Purpose: The Church Musician/Choir Director gives leadership to the worship services of Corona Congregational Church by using the organ/piano/keyboard to lift the congregation in music for the praise of God.
Supervision: The Church Musician/Choir Director serves under the supervision of the Pastor, or of the Deacon Board in the Pastor’s absence, and will work cooperatively with the Worship Committee.
Responsibilities: Subject to review and adjustment in conjunction with the Pastor and the Deacon Board, the following constitute the major responsibilities of the Church Musician/Choir Director.
- Select and provide organ/piano/keyboard music at all Sunday worship services, mid-week worship occasions, and all special celebrations of worship where the organ/piano/keyboard is the primary instrument used.
- Direct, rehearse and accompany the Chancel Choir, Gospel Chorus (and the Combined Choirs on special occasions), the Praise Team and children (on Youth Sundays). Accompany guest vocalists and instrumentalists as needed. Lead and coordinate the Gospel Chorus Concert in the spring each year and other concerts as shall be agreed upon with the Pastor or Deacon Board.
- Select appropriate hymns and songs in conjunction with the preaching pastor which are reflective of the liturgical season and designated Scripture texts.
- Provide organ/piano/keyboard music for all weddings and funerals held at the church for church members when the organ/piano/keyboard is the primary instrument used.
- Provide organ/piano/keyboard music for all weddings and funerals held at the church for non-church members when the organ/piano/keyboard is the primary instrument used. Fees for these services are not provided by the church, but are honoraria from couples and families at an amount determined by church policy. The use of the organ by another organist will be granted only by special permission of the Pastor or Deacons.
- Provide for qualified substitutes for all absences.
- Submit information for Sunday bulletins, as needed, in a timely fashion to the Pastor and the Church secretary.
- Choose and purchase music within the approved budgetary parameters.
- Oversee the tuning and maintenance of all musical instruments of the church within the approved budget and provide regular reports specifying maintenance needs to the Pastor, Deacons and Trustees.
- Submit budget requests each Fall as part of the budgetary process to the Trustees and Church Council.
Working Conditions
- The Church Musician/Choir Director shall rehearse sufficiently to maintain a high quality of music on the organ/piano/keyboard.
- An annual performance review will be done with the Pastor and Deacons, with consultation from the Worship Committee.
- The Church Musician/Choir Director will cooperate with all staff and musicians of the congregation so that music ministry is enhanced within the life of the church.
- The Church Musician/Choir Director shall seek professional relationships with other church musicians and keep abreast of developments in worship and liturgy through associations, continuing education, and professional church publications.
- The Church Musician/Choir Director shall have permission to conduct private music lessons and make the organ/piano available to qualified students.
Skills and Qualifications
- A minimum of a Bachelor of Music degree OR equivalent years of experience, and sufficient keyboard ability to sight read hymns, liturgy, and easy anthem accompaniments.
- Knowledge of Protestant worship tradition and a theological understanding of the church sufficient to appropriately select music and texts for all worship occasions.
- Experience as a "team player" in a church setting, working with staff, musicians, choir members and volunteers.
Salary and Benefits:
Commensurate with education and experience pursuant to guidelines of the American Guild of Organists.
